Micronesia Constitution Day is a national holiday in the Federated States of Micronesia, celebrated annually on May 10. It is dedicated to the anniversary of the adoption of the country's constitution, which was an important step towards full political independence.

History of the holiday
On May 10, 1979, the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia was officially adopted. This document established a democratic form of government and defined the country's governmental structure. It was the result of the Micronesian peoples' desire for self-governance after decades of external rule—first by Germany, then Japan, and finally the United States under the UN trusteeship system.

The constitution came into force when the four Micronesian states—Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae—united in a federation. From that moment, Micronesia began a new chapter in its history as an independent country, although official sovereignty was only achieved in 1986 under the Compact of Free Association with the USA.

How is Constitution Day celebrated?
Celebrations may vary from island to island, but usually include:

- Flag-raising ceremonies
- Public speeches by political leaders
- Cultural events and traditional dances
- Parades and processions
- Educational programs and discussions about citizens' rights and national history

This day is also used as a reminder of civil rights, the importance of civic engagement, and pride in national identity.

Significance of the holiday
Micronesia Constitution Day reminds people of the importance of self-governance, of the freedom that the islanders fought hard to achieve, and of the value of unity in a nation made up of many cultures and languages. It is a day when citizens not only celebrate their history but also reflect on the future.
